20 October 2016Royal London report slight drop in cost of funerals
Royal London have published their annual funeral index for 2016, and for the first time report a drop in the cost of the aveage funeral. At £3675, the average funeral cost is down by £27 - or 0.7%. Not a huge decrease but enough to justify the title of their report "Signs of Life" and evidence that the continuing pressure of campaigns such as Quaker Social Action's Fair Funerals is beginning to have an effect.
The sharpest rise in the number of deaths in nearly 50 years, the emergence of a new type of funeral at a much lower cost, funeral directors holding their prices and consumers perhaps increasing shopping around behaviour may all have contributed to this year’s unexpected result.
However despite this drop in costs, the amount of debt experienced by those unable to pay for a funeral for which they were responsiblle rose by almost £300 with the RL sample reporting an average shortfall of £1601.
