The Scottish Government today published their long awaited "Funeral Costs Plan", in which they outline what the government will do to help address funeral poverty in Scotland. Speaking at the All Renfrewshire Credit Union in Paisley the Minister, Angela Constance MSP, said the plan outlined ten actions which SG will take to improve the availability of affordable funeral options, including the introduction of the new Scottish Funeral Expense Assistance, which will launch in 2019 to replace the current DWP Funeral Payment in Scotland.
The Funeral Cost Plan also outlines an intention to work with Westminster and other agencies to improve the DWP scheme in the meantime, and also to work together with Westminster and others to address the need for improved governance of Funeral Plans and similar schemes.
Also launched today is a new publication, developed by Scottish Governement in conjunction with the Scottish Working Group on Funeral Poverty, entitled "Planning Your Own Funeral" which it is hoped will encourage individuals to discuss with families and friends what they wish for their own funeral, and thereby empower relatives to make appropriate arrangements when the time comes, reflecting what the person had wished for themselves.
SWGFP issued a response to the publication of the Funeral Costs Plan which can be accessed here.
